We all know sunshine on the skin is a good thing to build vitamin D which acts as an anti-depressant, an immune booster and supports strong bones. But sometimes too much of a good thing isn’t always the best for us and it certainly is worth paying attention to never burning in the sun.
When we made this recipe a few years ago, it was summer and we were experiencing an unprecedented run of hot sunny weather. My apprentices in the gardens were feeling sore and their skin was hot to the touch after being outside all day. They asked me for something to cool their skin and this is what I came up with. Since then, we have sold it in our farm shop and online, and have received rave reviews including this from Jen S. earlier this year:
“It’s an awesome lotion. We use it for more than just aftersun; it
speeds healing and is a lovely moisturizer too.” – Jen S. Courtenay, BC
In this recipe the aloe is cooling, soothing, moistening and an anti inflammatory on the skin. The chickweed oil is made here at Innisfree and takes out itching and tightness of the skin.
The lavender hydrosol and the lavender essential oil are soothing, anti inflammatory and reduce any itching. The colloidal silver is a cooling anti bacterial that is used in burn units to treat severe burns and is also used in water purification. This lotion has a very light texture on the skin – it’s moisturizing, but not oily. It also has a pleasant, light floral scent. When you put it on hot or irritated skin, you will feel its cooling and soothing properties immediately. It is safe for all skin conditions and it is safe for infants. Our customers report using it as a moisturizing face cream (Note: that there is no sun protection, no SPF in this product), for itching eczema, psoriasis and for diaper rash.
